Context

App concept for sharing and tracking expenses with close friends

Understanding

Situation

During a recent trip with friends, we often ended up covering expenses for one another. They suggested using one of the many expense-tracking apps available (which were not really good). When I asked for their opinions on the design and user experience, they simply shrugged and said: "Well, this is everything we have, you know."

As a product designer, I saw the opportunity to solve this gap. I decided to take matters into my own hands and reimagine the app — revamping its visual aesthetics and enhancing its features to offer a truly improved user experience.

Discovery

I conducted a series of in-depth interviews to understand how users interact with expense-tracking apps, uncovering key pain points and underlying issues that impact their experience. Alongside this, I carried out detailed competitor research to evaluate existing solutions, identify best practices, and spot gaps in the market— informing opportunities for meaningful improvements.

I transformed key user pain points into a structured pain list and developed a feature list that directly addresses these issues, ensuring a more seamless and efficient expense management experience.

visual design justification and benchmarking

I started by analyzing the values and emotions conveyed by competitors' apps and found a lack of distinct visual language. This led me to define core values that would differentiate the app and resonate with users. I reflected on the emotions and messages the app should convey, which helped shape its vision, mission and a visual metaphor that captures its unique identity.
